This week the Newton Bayside campus welcomed a doctor to the school to
teach all of our big kids in K2, and foreign staff, about health
emergency solutions. The doctor, who is one student's father, came to
the campus at 10:00 on Wednesday December 21st with a presentation for
the training. The English curriculum is currently studying how to stay
healthy and safe and this happened to be a great opportunity for us to
learn about emergency treatments such as CPR and the Heimlich maneuver.
Students and staff were taught the proper ways to help adults, children
and babies who are in need of CPR. The doctor gave everyone an easy way
to remember this with the acronym ABC, which stands for airway, breath,
and circulation. This is the order and process of treating a person who
is not breathing. Everyone also learned how to apply the Heimlich
maneuver to a person who is choking. The doctor explained all the
different ways to do this depending on the age of the individual, and
severity of the situation.
After the half hour presentation students were given the chance to ask
the doctor questions. All the children eagerly raised their hands to
learn more. Questions sparked discussions and then more questions and
soon everyone was participating in group learning environment.
As students returned to their classes the English teachers met with the
doctor to learn specific emergency signs to look for in children and how
to properly handle a situation. The doctor was able to cater to the
needs of each teachers specific age group and answer any questions the
staff had.
A special Newton thank you to Grace's daddy for preparing this training
for our students and staff! It is important that our staff is always
educated and prepared. The importance for the students in learning this
is that though they may not be able to administer any actual treatment,
they have learned that if they or someone around them is suffering from a
medical issue then they need to call for help.
