Part One: The First Glimpse of Primary School - Exploring Jinji Lake School
Activity 1: Campus Exploration – Sowing Seeds of Aspiration
Guided by primary school students, our K2 explorers wandered through the campus of Jinji Lake School, passing by Kunpeng Hall, Aile Hall, Lianghu Academy, and the Paper-cutting Museum. Their eyes sparkled with curiosity, and every corner filled them with wonder, reflecting their anticipation for primary school life! This on-site visit transformed the abstract concept of primary school into something tangible and beautiful.
Activity 2: Dynamic Recess – Discovering a Different Kind of Energy
"Wow, primary school calisthenics are so cool! You can play so many games during recess!" The children observed the primary students during their break, watching them jog, play basketball, and jump rope. They found that outdoor activities in primary school are incredibly rich. They cheered for the running primary students, competed with them in jump rope, and joyfully ran across the large playground!
Activity 3: Experiencing Growth – A First Look at Primary School Classrooms
Stepping into real primary school classrooms, the children quietly observed Chinese and Math lessons, attentively listening to the primary school teachers' vivid explanations, they also felt a different learning atmosphere. Furthermore, they joined their PE lesson. After observing the lesson, the children were invited by the primary school teachers and the older students to participate in the interactive segments of the PE class. Through these authentic experiences in various primary school subjects, they truly felt the difference between primary school and kindergarten curricula, marking the perfect germination of their interest in learning.
Activity 4: Campus Snapshot – Preserving Memories of Growth
After touring the campus, the children chose their favorite spots and captured these meaningful moments with their cameras. These photographs are not just cherished memories; they are powerful testaments to their growth! They will undoubtedly become the most precious keepsakes on their journey of development.
Part Two: On-Campus Transition Activities – Unlocking Primary School Life Skills
Activity 1:《Big Kid Day》——Be a big kid
As children transition to primary school, they become "big kids." How will a big kid spend their day in a new school? In our English class, our foreign teacher led the children in reading the picture book "Big Kid Day" and initiated a series of discussions around Matt, the "big kid," and his activities and feelings on his first day at a new school.
1. In the picture book, Matt couldn't find his teacher, Miss Kit, and even got lost on his first day at primary school. The children began to discuss what they could do if they got lost in a new school. What preparations could they make to help themselves find their way more quickly in a new environment? After a lively discussion, the children suggested: asking others for help, learning to read road signs and labels, and even making simple maps. They concluded that all these methods could help them quickly locate themselves in a new setting.
2. Matt felt that "Big kid day is bad." The children then discussed how they might feel about the various changes they would face after starting primary school. Would they feel excited, worried, or perhaps a mix of both? Through sharing their feelings and drawing pictures of things that would evoke these emotions, the children were able to visualize their feelings more clearly, helping to alleviate any potential anxiety.
3. How can one quickly make new friends in primary school? When Matt met his friend Dan, Dan helped him find Miss Kit, allowing him to quickly integrate into the subsequent activities and find his "Big Kid Day" quite fun. The children began discussing how to quickly make new friends in primary school. They even created self-introduction cards and simulated the process of using these cards to find friends with similar interests.
4. Matt discovered that "Big kids do not nap." What are the actual differences between primary school and kindergarten? Differences in time schedules, curriculum, activity venues... The children also discussed the arrangements for break times in primary school. They even designed their own break time schedules and daily timetables. Together, they experienced "Run, Tag Run," a game Matt played with his friends.
Activity 2: Time Capsule Wishes – A Letter to My Future Primary School Self
The children were full of anticipation for their upcoming primary school life, filled with many wishes: "I want to make many new friends!" "I want to be the class leader!" These hopes and desires were recorded in drawings or words and placed into a "time capsule" to be opened after they start primary school, to see if their dreams came true!
Activity 3: Stationery Managers – My School Bag, My Responsibility
What stationery do primary school students use? In a blind bag game, the children touched and guessed, not only recognizing different stationery items but also learning their proper usage and how to store them. In a stationery organization challenge, the children discovered how to quickly and neatly organize their school bags, so they no longer have to worry about misplacing items!
During this important transition from kindergarten to primary school, we concentrate on sparking children's desire and enthusiasm for primary school life while fostering their adaptability to this new stage of growth. When children can walk through the primary school gates with curiosity and confidence, we believe their journey of growth has successfully begun its next chapter. Let us support our children as they confidently navigate this new phase of their development!
