On Open Day, parents were invited to observe both the English and Chinese lessons. In the English activity, the children read the picture book The Acorn together. In the story, the squirrel’s friends come up with different ways to help it reach a high acorn. Through the story and the classroom interaction, the children practiced the simple use of a / an and reviewed the high-frequency words see and have. As the story unfolded, the children watched how the squirrel’s friends worked together to help it reach the acorn, and enjoyed the idea that solving a problem can be more fun when friends do it together.
In the Chinese lesson, the discussion returned to the theme of “animals that can swim.” Instead of simply asking whether an animal can swim, the children learned to classify animals according to how they breathe, grouping them into land animals and aquatic animals. The lesson also deliberately included interesting exceptions such as hippos and crocodiles, animals that live in water but also spend time on land. These examples often sparked new questions: which group do they really belong to? As children’s understanding develops, they may later discover more detailed ways of classifying animals, such as semi-aquatic animals. Such questions create space for further exploration and encourage children to build knowledge actively rather than simply receiving answers.
The Open Day family activity began with the game “Little Turtles.” The children put on their “turtle shells,” lay on scooters, and pushed themselves forward with their hands, imitating turtles swimming through the sea. Starting from the “beach,” they glided across to the opposite shore before passing the scooter to the next child. The following activity, “Sending Animals Home,” invited parents to join in. With the help of their parents, the children traveled by scooter to a “lonely island,” rescued an animal, and returned it to its proper home, marine animals to the sea and land animals back to land. Working together, families completed each rescue mission with energy and laughter. At the end of the activity, each child received an Animal Friend badge.
The children then surprised their parents with another badge, Animal Friend Family. In this warm moment of shared celebration, the Open Day came to a meaningful and joyful close.
